Abstract

This is a systematic literature review that goes to compile evidence regarding the application of animal welfare assessment techniques in intensive farming systems. Valuation of performance Performance of validation, species-specific welfare and practical feasibility review are evaluated with regard to dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs and broilers and laying hens. Resource based indicators can never perform as well as animal based in their diagnostic performance and they are therefore very well balanced. Precision Livestock Famering New technologies are finding an increased integration, but must be more broadly validated. Findings show that converged, scaled and scientifically sound systems of welfare evaluation are required.
